FLACS - Energy
FLACS-ENERGY is an explosion assessment tool dedicated to address challenges in connection with oil filled high voltage equipment like transformers and switches. When a violent short-circuit appear inside mineral oil, certain amounts of the oil will decompose into very reactive gases, and a further fraction of oil will be evaporated or sprayed into the surroundings as an aerosol particle. The combination of gases from cracking and aerosol-oil may be very reactive if ignited.
FLACS-ENERGY may calculate the dispersion of the gas and mist from the failure location of the oil-filled equipment, and further also the explosion consequences for different ignition locations and different moments in time. The tool can therefore be very useful to ensure a safe design of transformer rooms and surroundings, and may also be applied as a part of a quantitative risk assessment for such scenarios.
The understanding of the phenomena have been acquired through the SEBK research project, in which GexCon played a central role by doing explosion experiments at small-scale and large-scale with oil mist and hybrid oil mist and gas mixtures, and also developed a framework for quantitative risk assessments in connection through transformer room situations.
